Community Holistic Care Mulago (CHCM)’s Focus Areas

At CHCM, our focus areas are not separate silos — they are interconnected solutions to complex community challenges. Whether improving maternal mental health or reducing climate risks, our work is grounded in the lived realities of those we serve.

01

HEALTH

Maternal Mental Health in Informal Sectors

We are at the forefront of maternal mental health advocacy for women working in Uganda’s informal sector — often overlooked in traditional healthcare systems.

Our interventions include screening for perinatal and postpartum depression, offering community education, and advocating for the integration of maternal mental health services into Uganda’s national maternal health package. Our goal is to make mental wellness an essential part of motherhood, not a privilege.

02

HEALTH

Eye Care Services

Bringing eye care services closer to the informal sector workers in Mulago II from April 2025 to April 2026. This project supported by Seva Foundation implemented by CHCM aims at providing basic primary eye care services (screening for visual acuity, refractive errors, health education, referral of patients that require surgical interventions to the opticians)

03

HEALTH

Perinatal and Postnatal Depression

#Ssi ntondo- Do not normalize perinatal depression and postpartum depression among  living in urban slum areas : From January 2025 to December 2029. This project is about increasing knowledge on perinatal and postnatal depression among the community members and to ease access to mental health services among the pregnant and lactating women living in slum areas.

04

YOUTH & SKILLING

Youth Financial Empowerment

With support from World Vision Uganda, CHCM delivered financial literacy training to 25 young men aged 16–24.

Participants were empowered to save at least 15% of their income, start small businesses, and enroll in skills training. The program showed how even limited resources, when paired with guidance and opportunity, can transform lives.

05

HEALTH

Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR)

We advocate for the sexual and reproductive health rights of adolescents, youth, and women in marginalized communities.

Our programs cover comprehensive SRHR education, menstrual health awareness, prevention of early pregnancies, and access to services. Through partnerships with schools and local leaders, we ensure this vital information reaches those who need it most.

06

HEALTH

Access to Primary Healthcare

Access to affordable, timely, and quality health services remains a challenge in many low-income urban areas. CHCM provides primary healthcare outreach to community members, focusing on health education, early detection, and linkage to care.

Our approach is community-based and inclusive — ensuring services reach people in slum communities who often cannot afford or access regular health facilities.

07

climate action

Climate Mitigation Through Clean Energy

In response to the climate crisis, CHCM promotes the use of eco-friendly briquettes as an alternative to traditional charcoal or firewood.

We train local women and youth in briquette production and usage, helping them save money, protect their health, and reduce environmental degradation. Our clean energy approach is both practical and scalable — addressing both poverty and pollution.
